I fell in love with Mercedes automobiles during my many summers in the Fichtelgebirge area of the Oberpfalz in Bavaria. My wonderful friends and hosts, the Drehobels, always let me use their old Mercedes wagon. The most memorable trip was a ride with the late Herr Drehobel ("ein echter Bayer", as he used to call himself) to pick up Kachel (ceramic tile). As he raced through intersections and construction sites, he always noted "das darf nur ich, Tom". We also had an interesting trip to view an old Steinbruch (quarry) near his home town in the "Ostzone" as he fondly called East Germany. In the picture above, there I am, cigar in mouth, in honor of my dear departed landlord.
